Applications were accepted for the MurthyNAYAK Foundation (MNF)’s 3rd Annual Social Documentary Photography Grant 2020, awarded in association with SACAC. This annual award is open to all photographers under the age of 35, based in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka, whose work is in the social documentary genre. The purpose of the grant is to enable a photographer to continue a body of work which is underway, encouraging artists who wish to highlight areas of need, injustice, or neglect, awakening society and sparking change for these social, political, or cultural issues. In 2020, two grantees were selected to receive grants of ₹2,00,000/- and ₹1,00,000/-.
Encouragement and financial support are important to artists who have the talent and the courage to hold a magnifying glass before unpleasantness and a mirror to the face of society. By funding specific projects by filmmakers, photographers, and other artists, MNF aims to highlight important issues, transforming ignorance and apathy into concern and action. If a picture was once worth a thousand words, film and social media have increased that exponentially. It is our goal to support emerging artists producing socially relevant work that will raise awareness, sustain involvement, and ignite social change. In order to make the most effective use of MNF’s resources, grant making focuses on specific, short-term projects. (MNF has a 501(c)(3) designation in the U.S.)
