The MurthyNAYAK Foundation (MNF) is keen on education programs in India, and when we learned about the Chennai Photo Biennale’s (CPB) Photo Camps for urban youth, we knew we wanted to be a part of it! Photography breaks barriers and engages youngsters in telling their own stories. Today’s youth have an innate ability where technology is concerned, but guidance and lessons in discernment are in order to help them recognize truth from fiction. Experienced mentors, selected by CPB, instruct children from diverse backgrounds in photo basics using the iPhone, including light and shadow, composition and framing.
The CPB Foundation began conducting photography workshops across Chennai in November 2018. Starting with students from 25 schools, 25 especially promising children were invited to an advanced photography workshop on visual storytelling. Over the two days of this residential camp, students were exposed to many activities, with the freedom to create freely. “As it is often said, photography starts in the eye, and not in the camera.”
