Communities bring dynamic energy to the Social Documentary Photography Workshop Series by Sudharak Olwe and his team for Grassroot Storytellers. During this second year of the program, participants were thrust into a world of history, counter-narratives, and a spirit of creative freedom in a variety of workshops.
One group embarked on a 5-day residential workshop, attended by grassroot journalists working for under-served areas and rural students with stories they wanted tell through photos and videos. Through intense conversations, discussions, and practical sessions, the workshop explored a myriad of topics that led students to create great photographic work for the first time and inspired them to continue their stories. From subjects like farmers, housing, to migration stories, the students put forth ideas for visual narratives to be created. Many were inspired by the work showcased, while for others it was their first time looking and working through an artistic lens, rather than taking a journalistic approach to the subject. This workshop series aims to foster empowering ideas, inspire and enable young people, providing a platform to talented individuals from communities where advantages may be few, but rich thoughts and creative work abound and deserve to be showcased.
PhotoSouthAsia, an initiative of the MurthyNAYAK Foundation, is proud to provide financial support for Grassroot Storytellers. This support enables workshop participants to attend free of charge and covers stipends for mentors. It also may include procurement of space, supplies & materials, and other incidentals, as determined by prior mutual agreement.
