The School of Media and Cultural Studies, (SMCS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, teaches media production, research, and dissemination. A critical component is the school’s focus on creating synergies between theory and practice. Social documentary requires research and a deep understanding of the subject. SMCS seeks to develop a critical perspective on media, culture, and society.

The MurthyNAYAK Foundation provided support (Aug 2018-Jul 2019) to enable the archiving and dissemination of student films through narrowcasting, film festivals, outreach programs, and web. We funded a workshop on sound design, and sound design mentoring for ten student films, as well as a workshop on editing and an editing mentorship for ten student films. The focus on sound design and editing was to enhance the technical quality of student productions, which can increase the distribution and visibility of the films, further spreading the important messages of their content.

We know the vital role documentary film plays in exposing the world’s greatest areas of need, and the efforts of NGOs and nonprofits to address these. Training young filmmakers properly, so that their enthusiasm need not wane due to frustration over technical shortcomings advances not only the medium itself, but puts social change forward on firmer ground.
