Camera South Asia Symposium

“Camera South Asia” was a symposium to celebrate the launch of two new anthologies on South Asian photography and cinema. Unframed: Discovering Image Practices in South Asia, edited by Rahaab Allana, and BombayTalkies: An Unseen History of Indian Cinema, by Debashree Mukherjee, provoke a renewed look at questions of artistic practice and its relations to collaborative worldmaking, knowledge production, and archival memory. The event featured two panels of speakers consisting of artists, scholars, curators, and filmmakers, as they discussed the histories and futures of lens-based practice in and on South Asia.

 

The symposium was held at Barnard College, New York, NY, 27.Apr.2023, and co-organized by Professor Debashree Mukherjee (Columbia) and Rahaab Allana (Alkazi Foundation). Among the speakers were Iftikhar Dadi (Cornell), Noam Elcott (Columbia), the artist Chitra Ganesh (Brooklyn), Sudhir Mahadevan (Washington), Bakirathi Mani (Pennsylvania), and photographer Annu Matthew (Rhode Island). Closing remarks were by filmmaker Mira Nair.
