A mix of photo book, biography, autobiography, and fiction, Myself Mona Ahmed keeps renewing its importance in Dayanita Singh’s oeuvre with the evolving direction of her work. It was a photojournalistic project that brought the eunuch, Mona Ahmed, into Dayanita’s life. But it was Mona’s own refusal to be the subject of such a project that pushed Dayanita eventually to produce a visual novel. This book uses various kinds of text alongside the photographs to weave photography and literature into a life unfolded, which is much more the story of an inward journey and a relationship than the documentary account of a different social reality and sexual identity. This book is in hardcover, 176 pages, and measuring 20.3 x 17.8 cm.
Publishing is also a significant part of the Dayanita Singh’s practice: in her books she experiments with alternate forms of producing and viewing photographs. Here, Singh’s latest is the “book-object,” a work that is concurrently a book, an art object, an exhibition and a catalog. Learn more about Singh and her artistic practice on her website.
