Natalie Soysa is an activist, creating work mainly as a lens-based artist, but also as graphic designer, writer, and editor. After retiring early from a 13-year career as communications strategist and creative director, she went on to focus on non-commercial initiatives, working on projects that address gender and identity in post-Colonial and post-war Sri Lanka.
Soysa is also co-founder of BENDR, a design-based activism platform that engages people in dialog around gender and sexuality in a South Asian context. As a photographer, journalist, and documentary filmmaker, she has been published and exhibited in several countries. Soysa works part time as editor for the Sri Lanka Press Institute’s various publications. She has been commissioned to produce work by the Centre for Policy Alternatives, Groundviews, Royal Geographical Society, Women & Media Collective, United Nations, and International Centre for Ethnic Studies.
