PUBLISHING YOUR PHOTOBOOK: Choices for Photographers Today

What is the purpose of this workshop? 

 

To provide participants with an overview of the paths to being published, including finding a

publisher, self-publishing and/or creating a limited-edition photobook.

 

To impart strategies for participants to identify and reach the ideal audiences for their book.

 

Who is this workshop for?

 

Photographers who have a project in-progress, or completed, that they wish to bring to the book

form and who seek to understand production and publishing options, and the paths they can take

to reach their ideal audiences.

 

Established and/or published artists who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of

the independent, small press, self-published, limited edition, and artists’ book markets today.

 

What will the participants expect to learn?

 

Through classroom lectures by core faculty and special guest presentations, participants will:

 

  1. Be exposed to a wide variety of approaches to making books, including wildly divergent forms, structures, and content.
  2. Gain knowledge about the decisions that must be made regarding book design and production.
  3. Have an increased knowledge of funding for photobook production.
  4. Gain insights into a variety of opportunities in publishing, whether seeking out a publisher or self-publishing.
  5. Learn research methodologies for identifying public and private collections with an established interest in acquiring limited editions and unique works.
  6. Broaden their awareness of artists’ books and contemporary photobooks made by a broad range of makers.

Eligibility

You are eligible for this workshop if you meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals applying for the call must be residing in India.
  • Individuals applying for the call must be available for the entire duration of the workshop.

 

Expenses



The workshop is tuition free. PhotoSouthAsia will provide each participant accommodation on a twin-sharing basis. Covered meals include breakfast and lunch daily, and dinners when everyone is together for group events.

Ann Fessler is a non-fiction author, artist, and educator with a wide-ranging practice that includes photography, film, audio and video installations, and artist's books. Fessler is Professor Emerita at Rhode Island School of Design, where she taught for 24 years and served as both the Head of the Photography Department and the Director of the Graduate Program in Photography.

Mary Virginia Swanson's in-depth knowledge and professional relationships throughout the photography industry encompass a broad range of perspectives on both the making and marketing of lens-based work. A respected educator and advisor, she frequently serves as a Portfolio Reviewer, Judge at contemporary photography, photobook, and photobook maquette competitions, conducts public presentations at festivals and lectures at many photography institutions each year.
