On Saturday, 07.Mar.2020, Shahidul Alam, Tanvir Murad, and Meena Vari presented the South Asia Panel “Pathshala / Festival of Ideas / Truth to Power” at the SPE National Conference, in Houston, Texas.
Photography was widely used in South Asia and other parts of the world from its earliest days. Where colonization occurred, photography documented it. And yet, for generations, survey courses on the history of photography almost exclusively, until very recently, have taught students exclusively about European and American photography. From January 2020 meetings in Delhi, in collaboration with the MurthyNAYAK Foundation, SPE expanded connections internationally with photographers and scholars from India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Sharing the dynamic work coming from South Asia, the invited panelists represent the broadest range of creative practice and scholarly endeavor.
The MurthyNAYAK Foundation is proud to have brought these three representatives from South Asia. We were able to fly them to Houston, take care of their enrollment in SPE, which enabled them to participate fully in the lectures and programs, and provide for their meals and accommodations for the duration of the conference.
