Sukanya Ghosh

Sukanya Ghosh (b.1973) is an artist, animation filmmaker, and designer whose practice is located within painting, photography, animation, and the moving image. She works with family archives, found images, medical imagery, and text to traverse illusory narratives and sensory passages. She is interested in the minutiae of urban life, the fantasy of popular culture, and the shape-shifting of memory. She worked extensively with the techniques of collage, erasure, and deconstruction.

 

Ghosh has a BFA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda, and AEPEP in animation from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

 

Ghosh’s work has been part of several shows, both nationally and internationally. Among them: Repairing the Work of Time, 2019, Lianzhou Museum of Photography, China; Catalyst, Jimei x Arles 2019, Xiamen, China; Ellipsis, 2019 Jaipur; Ephemeral, Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa 2018; Mutations, 2018 New Delhi; Fòcas India: Document (India, Scotland); GoaPhoto 2017; The Surface of Things, 2016, New Delhi, and 2017, Mumbai; the India Art Fair 2017; Tales & Fables 2015, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Yokohama.

 

Ghosh managed arts programs and design at the Seagull Arts and Media Resource Centre, Calcutta, 2001-06. She has been involved in design projects including publicity design for the films Taare Zameen Par, and Peepli [Live]). She has more than 15 years of graphic design experience with projects such as book designs, exhibition and theater design. Ghosh lives and works between Delhi and Kolkata.

 

Honors & Exhibitions

She has been awarded the Charles Wallace India Trust Award, Sarai Independent Fellowship; artist commissions from Five Million Incidents (Goethe Institut India), French Embassy in India, Royal Commonwealth Society, UK, and Motiroti, UK, among others. She has been artist-in-residence at Khoj, New Delhi; Spike Island, Bristol, UK; and AIR Vallauris, France.
