Photography in India

It took mere months for the camera to make its way to India from its birthplace in Europe. Nearly two centuries later, the photographers of India have produced “… one of the least explored, but most impressive bodies of work in the world.” This book celebrates the works of the nation’s sons and daughters, as well as that of artists from other parts of the world, who have been drawn to photograph in India.

Perhaps most importantly, this account does not accept traditional western-centric presentations of Indian photography, but allows readers to hear the clear visual voices from the subcontinent. With more than 100 photographers contained in its pages – from Raghu Rai and Ketaki Sheth to Julia Margaret Cameron and Max Pinckers – the points of view are as diverse as one would expect to come from India.
