South Asia was well represented at the 2023 Rencontres d’Arles, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious international festivals of photography. For the first time in its history, half of the artists who were shortlisted for the Discovery Award 2023 Louis Roederer Foundation were from South Asia. The aim of the Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award is to promote the work of the selected artists, who are showcased in the Discovery Award exhibition. Winners are also rewarded with substantial monetary awards.
Selected curator, New Delhi-based Tanvi Mishra, is also a photo editor and writer who has worked for The Caravan and PIX. As an independent curator, she has worked for BredaPhoto, Delhi Photo Festival, and Photo Kathmandu. Her writing on photography has been published by Aperture, The Caravan, FOAM, and PhotoSouthAsia.
PhotoSouthAsia is proud to have supported Mishra and photographers: Vishal Kumaraswamy, presented by Party Office, India; Md Fazla Rabbi Fatiq, presented by Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Bangladesh; and Philippe Calia (France/India), presented by TARQ, India. Funds were required for the artists to complete production of the works to be included in the exhibition and to have everything shipped. It is usual for artists to receive these funds from their sponsoring galleries or organizations; however, these artists were sponsored by artist cooperatives and an educational institution.
Broadening inclusion must be the new normal. By promoting diversity of representation at the 2023 Rencontre d’Arles Discovery Award exhibition, it is our hope that more artists from regions beyond Europe and North America will be encouraged and submit their works to this and other celebrations of photography globally.
