From its beaches in the south to its fishing villages in the north, Chennai itself becomes the gallery space when exhibitions are installed biannually for the Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB). The aim is for this celebration of the medium to reach all corners of the city, and every inhabitant (and visitor), whether a regular frequenter of the city’s cultural and arts venues or (and perhaps most especially) one who has never noticed or considered whether art has a place in her/his life.

CPB strives to engaging Chennai’s communities and generations through exhibitions, panel discussions, presentations, workshops, mentorships and educational programs. “In a globalized world, where the photographic image has transformed from its primary objective of representation, depiction and documentation to become a measure of identity and self worth, it becomes imperative to reassess its purpose, its potential, and its power to impact the human mind and decision making.”

Chennai Photo Biennale was founded by the CPB Foundation and Goethe-Institut, Chennai, in 2016 as a public arts initiative in response to the growing interest in photography in India, specifically in Chennai.
