Photography for City Youth

The MurthyNAYAK Foundation’s 2015 support of Wide Angle Youth Media of Baltimore enabled them to continue their summer Youth Photography Traveling Exhibition Program (YPTE) in partnership with the Enoch Pratt Free Library. This program teaches young people how to make compelling photographs and tell stories through their experiences. During each library-based workshop, students combine street documentary and portraiture to capture their communities and explore the theme of “home.” They also experiment with projections and writing exercises to explore “home” through metaphor and poetry.

Fifty-four students participated in six different photography workshops throughout Baltimore City. Their final images became Traveling Exhibitions for spring shows and summer pop-up galleries at six area farmers’ markets. The exhibitions shifted the suspicions aimed at urban youth to perceptions that celebrate and encourage them through highly-visible installations of powerful imagery. Wide Angle Youth Media believes in cultivating and amplifying the voices of Baltimore youth through media arts, providing them and area communities with the media education and resources to represent themselves.
