PhotoKTM/5 – Learning Programs

Educational programs are a critical part of engaging the viewing / visiting public with the works made by photographers and other artists. To turn visits from young people and educators into immersive learning experiences, PhotoKTM partners with Srijanalaya for each edition of the festival to design a robust Arts and Education program that facilitates a variety of engagements for experiencing the exhibitions and programs hosted by the festival. Through guided tours and discussions, seminars and workshops, the Arts and Education program provides opportunities for young people and educators to use the festival programs to reflect on their own art practices and produce relevant work. PhotoSouthAsia, an initiative of the MurthyNAYAK Foundation, supported these PhotoKTM/5 – Learning Programs at the 2023 edition of one of the world’s largest photo festivals.

Fashion x Visual Culture Lab

This 4-day lab was a learning exercise hosted by PhotoKTM and designed to give participants a unique hands-on experience, involving them in the making of a fashion campaign. The lab also sought to spark conversations on how fashion and photography are shaping Nepali and global visual culture.

Creative Research – The Roots of Your Work

Research can catapult a project into new and uncharted territories. It also can unexpectedly push boundaries on how one’s work should be presented. This workshop aimed to strengthen creative research methodologies, finding where research and the creative process overlap.

CO.LAB.PRESS

CO.LAB.PRESS was a collaborative learning laboratory that functioned as a newsroom during PhotoKTM5, with the goal of producing regular dispatches from the festival. The intensive 10-day lab explored the creative process that is found in soulful storytelling, inspiring further conversations through hands-on exercises and nurturing the creative mindset translating ideas into printed matter.

Learning from Doubt

Learning from Doubt was a 5-week hybrid course, with both online and in-person sessions, that emerged from The Sovereign Forest by Amar Kanwar. It was made as the IHME Helsinki Commission for 2022. The course included a total of nine modules comprising interactive sessions with the artist, independent study through films, readings, podcasts, and group discussions.

PhotoKTM/5 Learning Programs worked closely with schools, teachers and students by conducting workshops and guided tours. Special learning kits prepared by the festival supported teachers and families in focused learning experiences, making their visit to the festival an enjoyable experience for everyone.

PhotoSouthAsia is proud to provide financial support for PhotoKTM/5. This support enabled participants to attend learning programs free of charge and covered stipends for mentors. It also may have included procurement of space, supplies & materials, and other incidentals, as determined by prior mutual agreement.
