South Asia Photo-Symposium Update

In January 2020, the MurthyNAYAK Foundation (MNF) hosted an invitational symposium on Photography and Photo Education in South Asia. Representatives from the Society for Photographic Education (SPE), Aperture, the Alkazi Foundation, Chennai Photo Biennale, Critical Collective, MAP Academy, and The Polis Project were among the presenters who gathered in Delhi. Educational institutions who also gave presentations were Jamia, JNU, NID, Pathshala, photo.circle, SACAC, Shristi, and Sophia College for Women. Practitioners also present included Sunil Gupta, Sanjeev Saith, Ram Rahman, Sudharak Olwe, Annu Palakunnathu Mathew, Sorab Hura, and Max Pinckers.

Collaborations between attendees began in short order – a very satisfying result from our efforts to bring folks together. In addition, SPE’s international conference, held in Houston in early March, set aside a slot for a South Asia panel. Tanvir Murad represented Pathshala, and Meena Vari represented Shristi. We were very pleased that Shahidul Alam also agreed to serve on this panel.

Perhaps future gatherings, whether with this group or others, will be organized to discuss particular topics or work toward specific common goals. We look forward to seeing where the attendees lead us.
