When Museo Camera approached us with their plan to offer a photography workshop to urban youth in Delhi’s neighborhood of Gurugram, we thought, “Kids? Photography? Those are two of our favorite things!” And PhotoSouthAsia, a project of the MurthyNAYAK Foundation was pleased to offer support.
The project funds a total of about 35 youths, who attend twelve interactive sessions over the span of twelve weeks, allowing them to develop comfort and familiarity with the camera. Students tour the museum for a lesson in photo history and receive instruction in the art of storytelling, while gaining skills in the nuances of mobile photography. They practice location shooting and receive critiques from respected mentors in the field of photography.
The 17 students in the first round of the workshop came from Govt. Sr. Secondary School, Nathupur and Saksham Bal Vikas Santha. The children in the program were identified by teachers at Saksham, which is a charitable organization committed to providing education to underprivileged children. Skill acquisition and vocational training is an integral part of the curriculum. Programs like the one at Museo Camera enhance their exposure to such training.
The program concludes with a curated exhibition of the students’ final images, showcased both at Museo Camera and the NGO school. This is a rare opportunity for any student. For children who have not been presented with many gifts in their young lives, it is particularly gratifying to be able to be a part of an experience that provides them with skills and success, building their confidence to carry them through life.
